The Castroviejo-Epker caliper is the long-arm 18 cm pattern built for orthognathic and maxillofacial measurement, with a 40 mm range and straight tips for taking a reading in line with the arms on an exposed surface. Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need straight tips instead of angled?
When the surface is exposed and the arms can sit square to it. For points you have to reach over or around, use the angled pattern on its own page.

How is this different from the small Castroviejo caliper?
Scale and reach. The small Castroviejo is 8 to 9 cm for fine marking; the Epker pattern is 18 cm with a 40 mm range for facial skeletal measurement.

Does the setting hold once I let go?
Yes. The thumb screw locks the arms, so you can set a distance, lock it, and transfer the same measurement repeatedly without re-reading the scale.

Will the scale wear off in the autoclave?
No. The graduations are engraved into the steel, not printed, so repeated cycles at 134 °C do not fade them.

Can the tips be re-pointed?
Yes, by a competent instrument workshop, but keep both tips identical in length or the readings shift.

Is it supplied sterile?
No. It ships clean and non-sterile, ready for your own cleaning and autoclave cycle at 134 °C before first use.
