What is the difference between Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors?
Mayo scissors have shorter, heavier blades for cutting thick tissue and sutures. Metzenbaum scissors have longer handles and thinner blades for fine dissection of delicate tissue.
What do TC (tungsten carbide) scissors offer?
Tungsten carbide inserts keep the cutting edge sharp much longer than plain stainless steel. TC models are identified by gold-coloured ring handles.
How should surgical scissors be cleaned and sterilized?
Rinse off blood and debris straight after use, clean manually or in an ultrasonic cleaner with a neutral-pH detergent, rinse and dry thoroughly, then steam sterilize in an autoclave. Open ratchets and joints during cleaning and sterilization, and lubricate hinges with instrument milk to keep them working smoothly.
