Common Vaginal Hysterectomy Instrument Groups
A vaginal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina. The instruments used in a vaginal hysterectomy may vary slightly depending on the surgeon's preferences and the specific circumstances of the surgery, but here are the common vaginal hysterectomy instrument groups typically used during the procedure:
Vaginal Speculum: Similar to the speculum used in gynecological exams, this instrument helps to visualize the vaginal canal and cervix during the surgery.
Tenaculum forceps: A tenaculum is used to grasp and stabilize the cervix during the procedure, allowing the surgeon better control and access to the uterus.
Vaginal Dilators: Dilators may be used to gently widen the vaginal canal, facilitating access to the uterus and other pelvic structures.
Scissors and Dissecting Instruments: Various scissors and dissecting instruments are used to separate the uterus from surrounding tissues and ligaments.
Clamps and Forceps: Hemostatic clamps and grasping forceps are used to secure blood vessels, ligaments, and tissues during the surgery to minimize bleeding and facilitate tissue removal.
Suture Material and Needle Holder: Sutures are used to close any incisions or to ligate blood vessels. A needle holder is used to manipulate the needle during suturing.
Retractors: Retractors are used to hold back tissues and organs, providing the surgeon with a clear view of the surgical field.
Bladder Retractor: In some cases, a bladder retractor may be used to carefully move the bladder out of the way, particularly if it has fallen or is adherent to the uterus.
